Gradwell Ecology have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Ecologist / Senior Ecologist to join our team. This is a full-time position, available for an immediate start, although part-time will be considered for the right candidate.

About Us

Gradwell Ecology is an independent ecological consultancy based in the West Midlands, working on projects across the region and beyond. We deliver a wide variety of work — from small-scale conversions to complex and challenging developments — meaning no two days are ever the same. As a CIEEM Registered Practice, we pride ourselves on our strong ethical framework, working closely with clients to create spaces where wildlife and development can exist side by side.

The Role

This role involves working on and managing a diverse range of ecology projects, from initial surveys to report writing, mitigation, and monitoring. While a significant proportion of our work is bat-related, your projects will also include PEA/UK Habitats Classification, Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, and other protected species surveys. You will enjoy a good balance of both field and desk-based work. We offer a flexible approach to working hours and can support office or hybrid working depending on your preference and location.

What We’re Looking For

  • An appropriate degree-level qualification and associate or full membership of CIEEM.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in ecological consultancy.
  • A Natural England Level 1 bat survey licence (Level 2 preferred).
  • Strong understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain and the statutory metric, with willingness to develop expertise further.
  • Significant experience in UK Habitat Classification, PEA surveys, and protected species surveys.
  • Proficiency in QGIS.
  • Excellent report writing skills and technical review experience (including PEA reports, Ecological Impact Assessments, and other formats).
  • A genuine enthusiasm for ecology and the wider environment.
  • Strong organisational skills, motivation to work independently, and good interpersonal communication.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and during unsociable hours in bat survey season (April–October).
  • A full driving licence, access to a vehicle with business use insurance.
  • Residing in (or willingness to relocate to) the West Midlands area.

Benefits of Working with Gradwell Ecology

  • Flexible approach to working hours.
  • Salary £30k+ dependent on experience.
  • Payment of professional fees.
  • Commitment to investing in training and career development.
  • 28 days’ annual leave (including bank holidays).
  • Healthy work/life balance through shared workloads, TOIL policy, and regular staff check-ins.
  • Friendly and supportive work environment.

Gradwell Ecology is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy/maternity. We are committed to promoting and protecting the physical and mental health of all our staff.
